Limited English Proficient (LEP) Students

The Limited English Proficient Population: Students

For Factor 1, we examine both the LEP population within the community and the LEP students participating in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program.  ESL is a Virginia public school program designed to help LEP students learn English as a part of their daily school curriculum.

Use the map and chart in the dashboard below to examine the student LEP population in your LHD. Counties and independent cities in the map are shaded to represent the ten year growth in the number of students participating in LEP programs. Select different  LHDs or school years in the dropdowns in the upper right of the dashboard to view specific LHDs and school years. (Note:  Map colors always refer to the 10-year growth rate.  Alternatively, click on a county or independent city in the map to select its LHD. Hover over counties in the map or languages in the chart to reveal further details. Additionally, click on the “Local Health District” heading at the top right of the chart to reveal detailed information by county or independent city.
