Local Health District Patients, Visits and Teleinterpretation

Local Health District Patients, Visits and Teleinterpretation

The second factor examines the frequency with which LEP individuals come into contact with VDH programs.  The dashboards on this page show data on unduplicated patient counts, patient visits and teleinterpretation calls for each of Virginia’s 35 local health districts. The charts on this page use data from VDH’s Webvision program and Propio Language Services for the year 2014. Overall, during the 2014 reporting year, VDH reported 45,493 unduplicated LEP patients and a total of 298,430 LEP encounters.

Navigating the LHD Unduplicated Health Districts Chart

The first chart shows the number of unduplicated patients which visited each LHD. The total number of patients is represented by the thin gray line labelled “total patients” on the right. Hover over the line to see the specific figure. The bars to the left show the number of patients by language spoken at home. These bars are divided into two sections: one for those who requested an interpreter or translator and one for those who did not. Hover over each bar to see the languages spoken and details. The gray band in the background is the total number of unduplicated patients for the included languages. Hover near the end of the band to view the total number of LHD patients that do not speak English at home. The next chart is very similar; however, it represents visits instead of patients.

Use the dropdowns in the upper right to select languages and local health districts in both charts. The default selections do not include English among selected languages. If you include English by checking its box or the “All” box, the gray band in the background will expand until it reaches the “total patients” line. This is because all languages, and thus all patients, are selected.  Detailed information is displayed below in the Patient Visits Table.

Teleinterpretation

In order to help health districts comply with the culturally and linguistically appropriate health care services (CLAS) requirements, VDH has contracted with Propio , a provider of telephonic interpretation and translation by trained and certified professionals. Overall in 2014 VDH utilized the language service for 16,235 calls totaling 216,393 minutes. The following dashboard summarizes the 2014 calls for each LHD (including those in Fairfax and Arlington which use other telephonic providers).
