{"id":482,"date":"2024-12-31T12:21:09","date_gmt":"2024-12-31T17:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.vdh.virginia.gov\/omhhe\/hoi\/?page_id=482"},"modified":"2024-12-31T22:30:12","modified_gmt":"2025-01-01T03:30:12","slug":"482-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.vdh.virginia.gov\/omhhe\/hoi\/482-2","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Youth Well-Being Index<span class=\"color\">.<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Similar to the Virginia Health Opportunity Index (HOI), the Youth Well-Being Index (YWBI) is a group of indicators that provide broad insight into the overall opportunity communities provide young people to live long and healthy lives. Using variables specific to Virginia residents age 18 and younger, the YWBI is made up of <span class=\"color\"><strong>24 variables<\/strong><\/span> combined into <span class=\"color\"><strong>8 indicators<\/strong><\/span> reported at the census tract level. The indicators are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"color\"><strong>Crime Indicator:<\/strong><\/span> Includes crime data from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Uniform Crime Report.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"color\"><strong>Family Stability Indicator:<\/strong><\/span> A measure of stable family situations including the proportion of children living in divorced or separated households, single-parent households, or as foster children.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"color\"><strong>Housing Indicator:<\/strong><\/span> A measure of housing quality that includes the proportion of housing units built before 1951 and without plumbing facilities, along with the proportion of overcrowded households defined as more than two occupants per room.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"color\"><strong>Population Density Indicator:<\/strong><\/span> The number of persons per square mile in the census tract.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"color\"><strong>Poverty Indicator:<\/strong><\/span> A measure of stress caused by economic conditions, including the proportion of children living in poverty, living in households receiving Supplemental Security Income, and the proportion of households receiving public assistance.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"color\"><strong>Pre-K Enrollment Indicator:<\/strong><\/span> The proportion of 3 and 4 year old children enrolled in nursery or preschool programs.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"color\"><strong>Primary Care Access Indicator:<\/strong><\/span> The number of primary care physicians within a 30-minute drive of the census tract.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"color\"><strong>Psychiatrist Access Indicator:<\/strong><\/span> The number of psychiatrists within a 60-minute drive of the census tract.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Initial versions of the YWBI included an <span class=\"color\"><strong>Education Index<\/strong><\/span>, an indicator of fourth grade math and reading proficiency. However, the education index was as predictive of health outcomes as the other indictors combined and the remaining indicators were predictive of the education index.
