{"id":239,"date":"2016-09-16T08:09:55","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T12:09:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/apps.vdh.virginia.gov\/omhhe\/hoi\/?page_id=239"},"modified":"2016-09-23T07:06:18","modified_gmt":"2016-09-23T11:06:18","slug":"consumer-opportunity-profile","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/apps.vdh.virginia.gov\/omhhe\/hoi\/consumer-opportunity-profile","title":{"rendered":"Consumer Opportunity Profile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Place Matters, Community Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We know that where you live has an impact on your opportunity to live a long and healthy life, but this has little to do with where the pin drops on the map. \u00a0Rather, it is the contours of each neighborhood\u2013it\u2019s DNA\u2013 that influences health. \u00a0Every community has strengths, even those facing the most challenges. \u00a0The Health Opportunity Index is designed to help residents identify which of the factors are supporting health opportunity in their communities and which may be holding them back. \u00a0Our main dashboards allow communities to examine the HOI\u2019s broad profiles\u2013the chromosomes\u2013that influence health. \u00a0Our Profile dashboards dive deep into the profiles and allow communities\u00a0to examine indicators\u2013the genes\u2013that may affect the opportunity to live a long and health life in each community.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">The Consumer Opportunity\u00a0Profile<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Consumer Opportunity Profile examines the access each community has to basic consumer resources. \u00a0These include not just the basic staples needed to survive, such as food and housing, but also the tools needed to succeed in modern society, such as education and access to credit. \u00a0While some of these are day to day concerns like access to healthy food choices others represent the resources community members have accumulated of consumer resources. \u00a0Education, for instance, is measured in years of schooling. \u00a0Likewise home ownership usually requires savings, good credit scores and stable employment to secure a mortgage loan.\u00a0The dashboards below allow you to explore your community in detail on the following factors included in the Consumer Opportunity\u00a0Profile:<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Affordability Indicator<\/strong>: The proportion of a community\u2019s income spent on housing and transportation. This indicates how much income remains for other priorities, including food, health care and social activities.<br \/>\n2. <strong>Education Indicator<\/strong>: The average number of years of schooling among adults in the community. It can range from zero (those with no formal schooling) to 20 (those with a doctorate\/professional degree).<br \/>\n3. <strong>Food Accessibility Indicator<\/strong>: A measure of access to food by low income people within a community. It also varies significantly block by block and street by street within local health districts.
